November 10, 1982: As dredging and parking lot construction for the new small boat harbor nears completion, Department of Transportation Project engineer John Edwards says the harbor may be operational by next fall. The dredging, which began in mid-August, is about 50-60 percent complete. As of Monday night, 288,150 cubic yards will have been removed. The United States Coast Guard Cutter SPAR arrived in Petersburg Saturday afternoon to honor Laura Marie Nuss-Rokey for her service in the Coast Guard during World War II. “We had no intention of coming to Petersburg,” SPAR Captain Michelle Schallip said. “But when we found out Mrs. Nuss-Rokey was here we had to make the trip.” Nuss-Rokey is City Manager Steve Giesbrecht’s mother in law. October 20, 1982- The Connexion, National Bank of Alaska’s new automatic teller machine, is now operational in five locations in Southeast Alaska. The machines, tied to the bank’s central computer system in Anchorage, are being used by customers in Ketchikan, Juneau and Sitka. Ketchikan and Juneau each have two National Bank of Alaska offices and The Connexion is available at those locations. By using the special “Connexion” card and personal identification code, NBA customers can perform any one of seven banking transactions 24 hours a day....

Petersburg Bible Church welcomes Demer Webb as a new pastor for the growing congregation. Webb and wife, Dana, have been married for 14 years and have three children, Ethan, 10, Ella, 7 and Elijah, 2. The Webb family moved here from Atlanta and hopes to make Petersburg their home. On a beautiful Saturday, the Humpy 500 was held indoors at the Community Gym. The day continued as a success even if not in its normal venue, normally down PFI hill. Teams went head to head with carts built by the teams to represent sea life. Six teams competed in a cart race, and costume and cart design contests. Two paintings by Beth Flor have been selected for the International Museum of Art’s Annual National Juried Art Exhibition. The oils “Sidewalk Restaurante” and “Old Woman on a Balcony” were chosen by juror Bill Bissell.
