Moved in To the Editor: Now that the Volunteer Fire Department has moved into Station One, we'd like to thank the State of Alaska for the funding for our new building. Countless hours were put into the design plans for the building and overseeing the construction of an energy efficient structure. If we step back a few years, our city manager recognized that the Department was still struggling with the cramped facility on Nordic and approached our Legislators who were successful in adding funding for our new building to the Capitol Budget. Our n...

  • Peggy's Corner of the House

    Representative Peggy Wilson|Jan 26, 2012

Hello and welcome to Peggy’s Corner of the House. I’m excited to be back in Juneau representing District 2 in the State House. I’m sad, though, that this will be my last year representing Sitka, Petersburg, Pelican, Elfin Cove, Port Alexander, Kupreanof and Baranof Warm Springs because of redistricting. This is the second year of the 27th legislative session, and we’ll be working hard to gain approval of all the good legislation that was introduced last year. This is my second year serving...

  • Praise to my wife

    Ron Loesch|Jan 19, 2012

It all started with a pat on the back from the Chief of Police who praised the work of one of his employees at the end of the city council meeting. Nothing to worry about I thought. But Chief Agner stammered a bit and then broke into unabashed praise for his wife, Sgt. Heidi Agner. The Chief started, “Normally I don’t do this. It is going to be a little odd because it’s somewhat nepotism related. But I really would like to recognize Sgt. Heidi Agner. Sgt. Agner …who through a great deal of diligence, who for well over a year, has been working...

Putting it in writing To the Editor: To: Steve Giesbrecht, City Manager The City is not telling the whole story. I wanted to clear up a few things in regards to the false statements and allegations of me being unresponsive or unwilling to comply that were made by the city in last week's newspaper. After receiving the letter of alleged violations in August, 2011, I personally escorted Mr. Leo Luczak throughout the Leconte Trailer Park to show him that all of the water and sewer is and has been functional for every space in the trailer park. On...

Deeply grateful To the Editor: On December 14 someone did an act of kindness that I will never forget. Someone bought me a round trip ticket to my home state to allow me to be there for my grandpa’s funeral, an event in which I had no intention of attending even though I had almost enough miles to pull it off. I am still somewhat in shock This is something I did not ask for but it’s something that happened. Whomever is responsible for this please know that I am very thankful for this. I was finally able to have closure on that part of my lif...

    Dec 22, 2011

To the Editor: On Tuesday, December 20, it seems like half the community of Petersburg came out to help me and Santa celebrate our birthdays. I just turned 67. I can’t speak for Santa, whose poor dear wife had to stay home with the flu, but I appreciated the party – it was just a delight. Connie Morgan...
