Council won’t challenge redistricting ruling

 


The City of Petersburg lost its redistricting argument that the city’s new voting district is not compact as is required by the Alaska Constitution.

Following the 2010 census, the Alaska Redistricting Board amended districts and Petersburg was moved into District 32, which consists of the areas of Juneau, Skagway, Gustavus and Tenakee Springs.

Superior Court Judge Michael P. McConahy ruled, “The shape of the district is caused by Alaska’s unique geography, particularly the shape and placement of the islands. At some point a district must be deemed, ‘compact enough’ to satisfy the...
