The Alaska Redistricting Board on Sunday approved a new Concept Plan with new District Map lines. The Concept Plan is slated for judicial review this week.  

The Alaska Supreme Court last year allowed for an interim map to be used during the 2012 elections. The Court also ordered the map be redrawn to address some key issues including one of compactness.

The new Concept Plan makes some notable changes including grouping Petersburg in with 23 other communities to form House District 35. The committees in the newly-formed district lines include: Angoon, Coffman Cove, Craig, Hoonah, Kake, Kasaan, Kupreanof, Pelican, Point Alexander, Sitka, Tenakee Springs, and Thorne Bay. The district will still include Edna Bay, Elfin Cove, Game Creek, Hobart Bay, Hollis, Naukati Bay, Point Baker, Port Protection, Whale Pass and Whitestone Logging Camp. Petersburg is no longer in a district with downtown Juneau, which was a concern for community leaders.

“The Redistricting Board is scheduled to present the new concept plan to the court [today], Thursday, July 18. The Administration Department for the Borough believes the concept plan is a fair representation of compactness and social-economic compatibilities within Southeast and

recommends the notice be filed,” Acting Mayor Sue Flint told the Assembly.

The Borough unanimously, and without discussion, voted to adopt the new Concept Plan.

The City and Borough of Juneau, which is split between House District 33 with Gustavus and House District 34, has asked for an extension to July 19, to file a reply brief regarding the Concept Plan.
