PVFD restoring history with mechanic's help

Petersburg Volunteer Fire Department Chief Doug Welde starts up the department's 1928 Model A.

Working to preserve its history, the Petersburg Volunteer Fire Department has restored one fire engine and is wrapping up restoration of another.

"We're trying to create some interest with the younger people," Fire Chief Doug Welde said. "It's history and kind of neat."

Jack Slaght, a chief engineer on the M/V Malaspina, has experience working on a variety of engines.

"Some mechanics like to get away from work and not pick up a wrench after hours," he said.

That's not Slaght's thing. Engine and repair work isn't just a job, it's a hobby.
