Obituary: Burl Dean Weller, 73

Burl Dean Weller

Burl Weller, 73, lost his fight with lung cancer on Dec. 7, 2017 in Fairbanks, Alaska.

He was born in Sabina, Ohio to Orville and Juniata Weller on Feb. 1, 1944. He had four siblings, Barbra Jenstead, Orville Weller, Beverly Morlend, and Bobby Weller.

Airman Weller served in the U.S. Air Force from 1963-1966. He received the Air Force Commendation Medal for working under extremely adverse conditions, sporadic sniper fire by day and hostile attack at night, to provide security for an important strategic aircraft and to effect a more rapid recovery.

Ever since first moving to Petersburg, Alaska in 1983, he was a vital part of the community. He started his career in Alaska as a tree counter and thinner for the Forest Service. After over 20 years of working on road crews and facility maintenance, Burl officially retired from the Forest Service in 2007.

He operated his own furnace repair business for over 30 years.

He was a member of the Baha'i Faith for over 30 years.

He was an avid fisherman, he also enjoyed hunting and spending time with his family.

He was a member of the Moose Lodge since 1984, Governor of the Moose for four terms, a firefighter with the Petersburg Volunteer Fire Department for seven years, an assistant leader with the Boy Scouts for five years, and even worked as a janitor at the Post Office for a few years in his later years.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; two siblings, Beverly and Bobby; and son, Darrell.

He had five biological children; Tim Weller, Darrell Weller, Skye Walters, Grace Weller, and Andrew Weller and grandchildren Joseph Weller and Elizabeth Walters. He also had numerous others he considered his children including; Cheryl and Lonnie Morin, David Eder and Michael Eder. He had numerous other relatives and too many great friends to mention.

A Celebration of Life will take place at the Moose Lodge in Petersburg in March 2018. Further information will be published at a later date.
