The red belt conk is a stem decay fungus found in coastal rainforest ecosystems in the Northern Hemisphere. They grow on such trees in Southeast Alaska as the Western hemlock and white spruce. The fungus invades the wood of the trees, causing the wood to decompose. This red belt conk was found behind the Beecher Pass cabin last week.
