The first photo is of the ski cabin at the old ski hill, ca. 1940's and donated by Joe MacKechnie.

Once, Petersburg was speculated to become the future skiing hotspot of all Alaska. In 1938, "Alaska Life - The Territorial Magazine" described Petersburg as "long the home of good skiers," and highlighted plans for a big ski invitational to be held by the jumping hill which had been reconstructed as a CCC project. Many Petersburg skiers learned to jump in Norway and imported their skills back to Alaska. Opportunities to obstacle jump or "gelaendesprung" were anticipated to last till summer with construction of a new trail above timberline. Ski club officers that year were Peder Lund--Presid...
