Petersburg's own Becca Madsen and Katie Holmlund received a highly competitive statewide award last week. The two were named Alaska Afterschool Superheroes because, as the Alaska Afterschool Network wrote in their award announcement, "Katie and Becca have gone above and beyond in their roles to support children and families, fearlessly leading students in all weather and environments from the beach to the forest to the muskeg and beyond." Katie is "an advocate for all families to be able to afford high quality childcare and for fair wages for the employees of the community that are involved in childcare," and "Becca is known for the genuine relationships she fosters with students...she is the calm in the chaos of her students' world...she inspires, encourages, and never gives up on kids." The KinderSkog Nature Program is connected to the Good Beginnings Preschool which is housed the the Petersburg Lutheran Church's Rebbi Hus building on Excel Street.
