This flag flew over the Experimental Fur Farm, established out Mitkof Highway in the late 1930's by Earl Ohmer and operating under the initial direction of Dr. Jules Loftus and the University of Alaska. Loftus was succeeded by James Leekley, who donated the flag to the Museum. Pre-dating statehood for Alaska and Hawaii, the flag is reflective of its era with only 48 stars. It was hoped that more scientific management of fur production would improve success, with a focus at the farm on animal diet, genetics and control of parasites. The fur farm finally ceased operation in 1972.
