Vikings let 5-0 lead slip away in bottom of 7th inning
The Petersburg Baseball team holds their second place trophy after the conclusion of their DII State Championship match against the Homer Mariners, on Saturday, June 6th, 2026, in Kenai, Alaska. The Vikings were defeated by the Mariners 6-5.
For just the second time in their program's history, the Petersburg Vikings Baseball team were in the championship game - their opponent: the 8-6-1 Homer Mariners. The Vikings were three outs away from claiming their first state championship - but then, everything changed.
To get to that point, the Vikings had to defeat the Kodiak Bears. With the game tied at the bottom of the tenth and Scotty Newman up to the bat, he hit a single, walking off the Vikings and sending them to the championship game the following day.
