James Brooks and Corinne Smith, Alaska Beacon|May 22, 2025

Alaska’s public schools may see the largest permanent funding boost in well over a decade, after the Alaska Legislature voted for the first time since 2002 to override a sitting governor’s veto. With a 46-14 vote, lawmakers significantly increased Alaska’s per-student public funding formula, overriding Gov. Mike Dunleavy’s decision to reject House Bill 57. Forty votes were needed for an override. “This was a truly bipartisan vote reflective of everyone in Alaska,” said Speaker of the House Bryce Edgmon, I-Dillingham. Yereth Rosen, Alaska Beacon|May 22, 2025

After a poor showing last year, Alaska’s statewide commercial salmon harvest appears poised for a rebound, according to projections by state biologists. This year’s total salmon harvest is expected to be more than twice as big as last year’s total, thanks primarily to stronger returns of pink salmon, according to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game’s annual statewide run forecast and commercial harvest projection. The report was released this week. The department’s projected 2025 total harvest is 214.6 million fish, above the 2000-2023... Full story

May 22, 1925 – John Thompson has the framework up for a two-story building, adjoining the Citizens Steam Laundry, to be used as a machine shop and blacksmith shop downstairs with living apartments upstairs. Alongside of the machine shops will be built gridirons for small boats and boats of a larger fishing class. Also will be built a covered runaway on the shore side where autos can be repaired. There will be a pit so that it will be easy to work under the machines. “And you may say,” said Mr. Thompson, “that my gridirons, when not in use, wi...

News diversity makes us smarter To the Editor: Like many of you, I value the Pilot for its fair coverage of local news and views. In its pages we see the facts of our local issues, so that we can make decisions together despite our various political leanings. Unfortunately, this consensus reality breaks down as soon as we zoom out beyond the island, turn on cable news, or lock into our social media and video algorithms. When it comes to national news, most of us are more influenced by monied interests than we care to admit, even when we think...

Alaskans who want a larger Permanent Fund dividend, more state funding for K-12 education and the university, more money for child care services, highway maintenance or harbor improvements, more state aid for water and sewer projects, the state ferries or mental health services, or additional tax incentives to encourage business investment have a limited number of choices. They can cut from one area to divert money somewhere else. They can take more money out of the Permanent Fund, spending today but having a poorer tomorrow when the available...

  • Sitka Wolves sweep puts Vikings postseason hopes in jeopardy

    Aiden Luhr, Pilot writer|May 22, 2025

The Petersburg high school baseball team looked to claim their first pair of victories this past weekend against the undefeated Sitka Wolves. The Vikings ran into a Wolves buzzsaw as they were swept 3-0 by the Wolves, losing 17-0, 11-1 and 10-0. The Vikings have been inconsistent on offense and haven't scored more than three runs since April 12, against the Ketchikan Kings. "We've had games where balls are hit right to people. We had that happen multiple times in Sitka where the ball was hit...

"This class is incredibly supportive of...

    May 22, 2025

Markus Anderson What subjects or classes did you enjoy the most, and which ones challenged you the most? I enjoyed math, choir, shop, mactech. I think math was the most challenging but I really enjoyed my teacher. What advice would you give to incoming freshmen? I would say to keep a open mind and try new things. Also procrastinating is one of the worst habits to develope. Play some sports, stay active. Please describe a specific moment or event from high school that stands out as a highlight for you? One moment for me would be going to state...
