Esther Geneva Evans, 98, passed away peacefully in her sleep on November 22, 2014 in Gresham, Or. Esther was born on a farm near Dallas, SD. She was the daughter of James and Hattie Evans. She earned her teaching degree from Northern Teachers College in Aberdeen. After teaching in various country schools and at a high school in Rosco, SD, she moved to Petersburg, Alaska, in the fall of 1943 to teach business courses at the high school. The Hammer and Wikan grocery store is undergoing a remodel that will open up the front of the store and add more organic produce and natural and Asian food products. Dozens of youngster challenged themselves to read books this summer. Dozens of local businesses donated prizes, and it all concluded at a big pool party at the community gym on Tuesday. More than 40 children participated in the public library’s Summer Reading Challenge, competing for 64 prizes from local donors. The challenge began on May 29 and ended July 19. Sales increased for local Petersburg businesses by more than $14 million in 2013 compared to 2012. Business across town such as Viking Travel, Diamante Gift Shoppe and Hammer & Wikan all experienced increased sales. On October 5, 2013, Miss Esther Evans departed Petersburg to be closer to her family. Her nieces Karen Garst and Kathi Schwartz recently helped move her and her belongings from the Mountain View Manor where she had resided for the past year to her new home at Oatfield Estates in Milwaukie, Ore. Hammer & Wikan Grocery is expanding their produce, meat and freezer sections as its new freezer and refrigeration project is nearly complete. Some initial concern over the Petersburg Road Improvement Plan turned out to be less of an issue than originally anticipated. The $4.1 million dollar project began in September of 2012. A laundry list of charges were filed against Brandon Estes, 20, and Joshua Franklin, 26, during their arraignment August 29. The men are being accused of breaking into multiple Petersburg businesses last week along with the theft of cash and items at those locations.
