The dredging, which began in mid-August, is about 50-60 percent complete. As of Monday night, 288,150 cubic yards will have been removed. DOT is now estimating that 485,000 cubic yards will still have to be removed because the contractor, as allowed in contract provisions, is digging...
Promotional fact To the Editor: I enjoyed the quote from Mr. Giesbrecht in the October 25, 2012 Pilot “We need to make sure that all of our promotional information is based on fact.”So now we have fact to support a crumbled foundation. The foundation that I refer to is the Charter and Petition. The Petition makes promises which are not carried into the Charter. Once the vote is taken the Petition is meaningless. Charter provisions important to those living outside Petersburg were removed or changed. Public meetings were held early on to sel...

The $2 million dollar deficit for the North Harbor Project causes issues with Petersburg's city council members. Petersburg City Manager Steve Giesbrecht, made a funding proposal for the council to consider that provides funding for the shortfall in the cost of reconstruction for that project. “We tried to do the same thing with this that was potentially done for the Reid Marine Property,” Giesbrecht said. The plan is to take $600,000 from the harbor fund, coming from the raw fish tax that the harbor will receive this year; $350,000 from pro...
The funding for the completion of the North Harbor project is a main area of concern for the Petersburg Harbor Advisory Board. The Petersburg City Council Members and Harbor Board members met Friday afternoon to try to find ways in which to complete the project with funds available. “We have $7 million and that is the amount for the base bid with two alternatives that will bring the total to $9 million,” Petersburg Harbormaster Glorianne Wollen said. “We are hoping that next year the costs...
Alaska salmon sales had lots of ups and downs this summer, but held their own overall in a tough market awash with farmed fish. The wild salmon catch goes to market in many forms such as canned, fresh or frozen, fillets and roe. The state Revenue Department/Tax Division provides quartile reports on first wholesale prices for all of Alaska’s salmon forms by species and region. Its report covering May – August shows lots of wild salmon fillets were tossed on the grill this summer, and people were willing to pay more for them. Alaska pro...

City official continue to handle questions regarding the borough election issues. These issues are being forwarded to the two State agencies involved in the election, the Election Division and Alaska Public Officials Office, APOC. “The State is running this election,” Petersburg City Manager Steve Giesbrecht said. “We can answer some of the less confusing issues, but most of the questions need to be taken to the election officials.” The Borough Promotion Committee will hold its first official meeting at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 19. “We will be g...

October 13, 1982- She hasn’t heard a phone ring since early childhood and the ring of the doorbell is lost to her ears. The noises that keep life running smoothly for most of us still evade Petersburg resident Kathi Hammer, but a scraggly, two-year-old mutt is changing that. Bingo, a tri-colored springer spaniel trained at the Applegate Behavior Center in Jacksonville, Ore., was delivered to Mrs. Hammer recently and is one of the first hearing ear dogs placed in Alaska. The dog aids its master in the same manner as a seeing-eye dog s...

These votes did not change the outcome on proposition two. After the election, this measure was failing by only two votes and another four votes from the remaining ballots were all opposed to the increase. The...
With the only contested race on the ballot being for two seats on the Harbor Board, the propositions in this election become the hot topics. In unofficial results, 515 people voted no, and 274 voted yes for the Reid property purchase. The asking price for the land is $1.4 million and was to be paid for with a mix of local funding sources including a hike in harbor rates. According to Trident Seafoods Plant Manager Dave... Sing Lee Alley bridge work needed To the Editor: If the city feels they can afford to spend 1.4 million dollars on property and take it off the tax rolls, then they should consider re-planking the Sing Lee Alley Bridge (or Indian Street bridge) before someone goes through it. Many of the planks are rotten and have holes, and it also would be easy to trip on some of the bent over spikes. As for the borough, it will cost more money and we all will end up paying more taxes. The people that live in the outlying areas probably spend as much money...
