John Chester Randrup, 72, died on December 26, 2013 in Petersburg, Alaska. He prevailed over adolescent and mid-life illnesses but could not overcome the battle with cancer. Petersburg High School's advanced culinary arts students will be cooking at the ProStart culinary competition in Anchorage this spring. The nationally recognized program brings student chefs from around the state where they'll form teams and cook a three-course meal in one hour. Petersburg Mental Health Services will now have its own counselor present in Petersburg High School after receiving $25,000 for a suicide prevention grant. Petersburg district school enrollment numbers have decreased by 44 percent since 1997—almost double that of Wrangell and Sitka. Gwendolyn Frances "Fran" Norton, 93, died at home in Anchorage, Alaska November 16, 2013. Fran was born on April 10, 1920 in Fresno, Calif. to Don Dean Dawson and Cora Beatrice Howton. They were divorced when Fran was very young. Her mother later married Edward Nee. She lived much of her childhood in the mountains east of Los Angeles. On October 5, 2013, Miss Esther Evans departed Petersburg to be closer to her family. Her nieces Karen Garst and Kathi Schwartz recently helped move her and her belongings from the Mountain View Manor where she had resided for the past year to her new home at Oatfield Estates in Milwaukie, Ore. Esther was born on a farm near Dallas, S.D. She grew up on that farm, pitching hay or alfalfa to 75 head of cattle, milking cows, raising chickens, and helping with a huge garden. Chuck was born in Joliett, Penn. on February 2, 1942 to Leroy and Peg Kolva. He was raised with his two sisters Lois and Dorothy who preceded him in death. Survey data recently released to the Petersburg School District shows “cyber bullying” as a risk factor in the community and school officials are taking steps to curb the act. The Youth Risk Behavior Survey, filled out by high school students last February, compares local risk behaviors with state averages. Cyber bullying is a form of harassment through the medium of electronic devices and social media. 15.4 percent of Petersburg high school students reported to have been cyber bullied compared to 14.7 percent reported statewide.
