Hello again. After a short break to visit family, I wanted to report, from my Corner of the House, on all the latest news. Between budgets, a special session, and redistricting, there’s a lot going on. The best news is how well the Capital Budget came out. Because the legislature worked so carefully with the governor to keep expenditures at a reasonable level, there were very few vetoes. All the projects that are so critically needed in our District 2 communities can expect to get started, or at least be put out for bids, very soon. The recent...

The Region V Baseball Championships continued on Thursday for the Vikings after an 8-3 loss to Thunder Mountain moved Petersburg into the tournament’s loser’s bracket. Thursday’s game was against Wrangell which had also lost their first game on Wednesday. Vince Kowalski pitched the complete game for the Vikings. “Vince pitched a great game for us. He had complete command of everything,” remarked Viking Head Coach Jim Engell. Kowalski threw six strikeouts, had four hits against him, and gave up t...

The two-day Track and Field State Championship was held last weekend at Lathrop High School in Fairbanks, with Petersburg athletes scoring points in four events. Diane Murph ran in the 3200-meter race, she was seeded in 8th going into the event and that’s where she finished. “She worked as hard as she could. She’s only a sophomore and this is the first year she’s ever run, so I’m really pleased with how she performed,” said Viking Track and Field Head Coach Brad Taylor. Murph was the only Vi...

Let your inner-Norwegian out. The Little Norway Festival begins today. The annual event celebrates Syttende Mai, or May 17, the signing of Norway's Constitution in 1814. Petersburg has been formally celebrating the occasion since 1958. The celebration includes live music, food, traditional dance, art receptions, softball and the return of the Viking/Valkyrie jail. Activities run from Thursday to Sunday. “We are bringing back the classics,” said Little Norway Chair Holli Flint. “The Style Show,...
May 19, 1982 - With a six-day halibut opening in Area 2 drawing to a close on Monday, local processors reported that they were still receiving mainly shipments from smaller boats fishing close to Petersburg and that it was too early to determine the overall success of the halibut season. Greg Olson, general manager of the local Witney-Fidalgo plant, reported that many of the fishermen from the smaller boats were saying that the season was a little slower than last year’s. By Monday afternoon, Whitney-Fidalgo had received approximately 1...
Let us be teenagers To the Editor: This year Petersburg High School worked toward hosting a successful, safe and enjoyable Promenade. “Prom” is a classy event where students have the opportunity to dress formally and enjoy an evening with friends in a highly decorated special venue. We were a few of the students who attended Petersburg High School’s 2012 Prom: A Black Tie Affair. The junior class did an excellent job of decorating, and supplying tasty food and drinks. However, if you talk to the students who went, the majority of them will...
The Petersburg School District Board unanimously approved the $8.7 million balanced budget Tuesday night. The budget calls for 78 percent of the funding to come from the state and foundation, 20 percent from city and the remaining 2 percent in local revenues comes from various grants and donations. The expenditures for next year have not changed much from FY12. The district is expected to spend 72 percent of its budget on instruction. The remaining budget goes toward heating, maintenance, landscaping, equipment and other costs. “To have a b...

The track and field regional championship was hosted by Thunder Mountain in Juneau last weekend and the competition was fierce, almost as fierce as the weather. “It was incredibly nasty out. We thought about canceling the first day because of the high winds, the weather, the rain, but we didn’t have time to do a two-day meet in one day, so we pressed on,” said Vikings Head Coach Brad Taylor. Klas Stolpe described the meet as the coldest, wettest, most miserable meet ever. Despite the incle...

How Was Prom? To the Editor: “How was Prom?” This was the primary question asked of me in the days following the Prom (held Saturday night, May 5, 2012). The vast majority of Petersburg High School students and guests rose to the published expectations of the occasion and enjoyed an evening of fun and appropriate dance. Did some individuals need reminding? Yes. Were they respectful when reminded of the expectations? Absolutely. A big thank you and congratulations to our great PHS students for their help in making this a successful Prom. A spe...

More than 100 students attended the Petersburg High School Prom Night on Saturday, May 5. The students kicked off their shoes and danced to a variety of music from Lady Ga Ga to Nickelback. The Sons of Norway Hall was decorated like a disco with strobe lights and a mirrored ball. Balloon arches and streamers framed the dance floor as several students shared the dj duties with a laptop playing students’ favorite songs. At the end of the evening as fellow students, parents and young siblings l...
School Superintendent Rob Thomason presented a balanced budget to City officials on April 25 during a budget work session. No changes were made to the recently drafted Petersburg School District 2012/2013 operating budget. “Over the years we've had great directors, we've had a very supportive city, we've had staffs that have negotiated agreements that were fair and equitable, and we've been able to do some very wise spending … and so we're in better shape than just about all of our colleague districts,” Thomason said. The projected opera...

Keep it classy To the Editor: As we approach the end of the 2011-2012 school year, our annual Prom dance is almost upon us. As a staff, we enjoy the yearly transformation of our students dressing up and becoming “proper” ladies and gentlemen for a night. Especially in Southeast, devoid of malls and high-priced fashion stores (thank goodness), investing the time and money to dress formally is a major commitment and, coupled with the forever memories of prom night, should be a special night of friendship, festivity and laughter. Petersburg Hig...

Track and field kicked off their season in Ketchikan with an unusual meet last weekend. Most track meets are invitationals and are attended by many nearby schools, but the season opener scheduled in Sitka was canceled, so Ketchikan invited Petersburg to come down for a rare two-school dual meet. “It was the first dual that I’ve ever been a part of, and I’ve been coaching here for thirty years,” said Petersburg Head Coach Brad Taylor. To make things even more unusual, Mary Hagemann, the Ketchik...

Participants in Petersburg triathlons and 5-K runs will soon have the quickest, most-accurate race results than any other area in Southeast Alaska. With a financial gift from the Chamber of Commerce, the Petersburg Parks and Recreation has purchased a Jaguar Cubby Race Timing System from Innovative Timing Systems. The system, which costs about $4,000, uses radio frequency identification (RFID) tags to transmit data from a chip on each of the runners to a computer that tabulates race results. The RFID chips are worn usually on clothing or in...
