The Region V Baseball Championships continued on Thursday for the Vikings after an 8-3 loss to Thunder Mountain moved Petersburg into the tournament’s loser’s bracket. The two-day Track and Field State Championship was held last weekend at Lathrop High School in Fairbanks, with Petersburg athletes scoring points in four events. Let your inner-Norwegian out. The Little Norway Festival begins today. The annual event celebrates Syttende Mai, or May 17, the signing of Norway's Constitution in 1814. Petersburg has been formally celebrating the occasion since 1958. The celebration includes live music, food, traditional dance, art receptions, softball and the return of the Viking/Valkyrie jail. May 19, 1982 - With a six-day halibut opening in Area 2 drawing to a close on Monday, local processors reported that they were still receiving mainly shipments from smaller boats fishing close to Petersburg and that it was too early to determine the overall success of the halibut season. The Petersburg School District Board unanimously approved the $8.7 million balanced budget Tuesday night. The budget calls for 78 percent of the funding to come from the state and foundation, 20 percent from city and the remaining 2 percent in local revenues comes from various grants and donations. The expenditures for next year have not changed much from FY12. The district is expected to spend 72 percent of its budget on instruction. More than 100 students attended the Petersburg High School Prom Night on Saturday, May 5. The students kicked off their shoes and danced to a variety of music from Lady Ga Ga to Nickelback. May 5, 1982 - Many of the 61 nurses attending the Alaska Nurses Association convention held in Petersburg April 29-May 1 said it was one of the best conventions they had ever attended. Existing volunteers, and anyone who is interested in volunteering, will have to go through a background check, the Petersburg Medical Center board approved on Thursday. Each volunteer will be fingerprinted, be required to undergo annual TB screenings and watch training videos on infection control, hand washing, and HIPPA regulations. Track and field kicked off their season in Ketchikan with an unusual meet last weekend. With a financial gift from the Chamber of Commerce, the Petersburg Parks and Recreation has purchased a Jaguar Cubby Race Timing System from Innovative Timing Systems.
