    This year the Hospital Silver Tea will be held on Thursday, May 17 from 2 - 4 pm in the Long Term Care dining room. The entire community is welcome to help the Hospital Guild celebrate 75 years of service to the Petersburg Medical Center. On May 12, 1938 the Hospital Guild held their first Hospital Tea Day. The Tea observes the birthday of Florence Nightingale and honors all hospital workers.   • New screening requirements for hospital volunteers

    Existing volunteers, and anyone who is interested in volunteering, will have to go through a background check, the Petersburg Medical Center board approved on Thursday. Each volunteer will be fingerprinted, be required to undergo annual TB screenings and watch training videos on infection control, hand washing, and HIPPA regulations. The board has changed the policy for traveling physicians and other health care professionals who rent properties that are owned or leased by the Medical Center.     Nolan the Colon, a 30-foot-long, 15-foot-high and 12-foot-wide inflatable colon, covered in polyps and tumors, was the star of Saturday's Health Fair. This was Nolan the Colon's first visit to Petersburg. The display was on loan by the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium in Anchorage, and it travels around the state educating people about colon health.     Harold Peppers, 78, passed away April 16, 2012 at the Petersburg Medical Center. His best friend sweetheart, Pauline Young, son Bill and several family members were at his side. Harold was born to Onie and Adle Peppers on February 2, 1934 in Norman, Ark. The family moved to Longview, Wash. in 1942 where he lived until March 2000 when he and Pauline moved to Petersburg.     The Petersburg Medical Center set plans in motion to expand service to include acupuncture. The Medical Center Board of Directors approved a proposal for acupuncture training for Chief of Staff Dr. Jennifer Hyer. Hyer will study medical acupuncture at the Helms Medical Institute, in Phoenix, Ariz. beginning this fall and wrapping up training in the spring.     A long-time Petersburg doctor is now living and working in Antarctica. Dr. John Bergren, 50, is currently serving as the Lead Physician at McMurdo Station in Antarctica. Bergren is one of only 160 residents who will stay in McMurdo over the winter months, which runs from early February thru mid-October.     Ronald Bruce Simpson, 74, lost his battle with cancer on December 24, 2011. Ron was born on August 4, 1937, in Cashmere, Wash. to Orwan and Barbara Simpson. Ron’s very early years were spent in the Cashmere area. In 1943 the family moved to Anchorage, where Orwan, Ron’s father found work.     An elderly man was hit by a vehicle while crossing the street at Gjoa and Nordic Drive on Tuesday night at about 4:40 p.m. EMT Dave Berg responded from his office at Viking Travel and summoned police and the ambulance to the scene. The man’s name was not released, but Berg told the Pilot the man was crossing inside the crosswalk and was apparently grazed by the vehicle’s mirror as it passed.
