The Lady Vikings wear their hearts on their sleeves as they play, flagging each conquest with a flash of their smiles. That energy buoyed them to the next spike or sliding defense, but it might also be burning too brightly – coming from a strong start against Sitka on their initial clash, the girls were notably less vigorous in Saturday's second match. The Lady Vikings took the first game without much trouble, riding about four points ahead the whole way. Scored at 11:8 by the first Sitka t...
For the first time in many years, both of Petersburg's running teams will be going to the state championship match after both teams finished second at the regional meet in Ketchikan on Sept. 27. "It's been a long time since the boys have gone and it's been much, much longer since both teams have gone,'' said Coach Tommy Thompson. "They ran just fantastic. They may have finished second but it was the best performance of the year from them, just in terms of being really gritty, sticking together a...
While Petersburg's varsity volleyball team didn't bring home a win from their Friday and Saturday matches last weekend, neither did they break against the rock of Thunder Mountain's larger 4A team. Friday saw the team pull up just shy of a fifth game victory, 15-9 in the final set, while Saturday beat the Viking girls back to the beaches in a trio of 25- 13, 17 and 19 losses against the larger school. While it was disheartening for the girls, especially the emotional down after Friday's furious...
Petersburg's Vikings returned triumphant from their watery battles over the Sept. 19 and 20 weekend in Juneau for the Swim and Dive invitational match ups, but the youth can't lean on their laurels just yet - regional matches, set to launch Oct. 31 and Nov. 1 here at home will be the definitive test for the teams, Coach Andy Carlisle said. "We did pretty well - not as well as the last meet, when we were at home," Carlisle said. "I'm real confident, they're working real hard right now, which...
Petersburg cross country runners will be pacing themselves this week as they prepare to run in Ketchikan this weekend for the regional competition, coming off a strong performance in the recent Sitka match. The Vikings girls finished within one minute of each other, from Kayleigh Eddy’s 22:07.85 (11th, three and one half minutes behind first) to Julia Murph’s 23:02.93 (25th), holding an intimidating block of six comparably speedy runners just ahead of the packs of Juneau, Ketchikan and Mt. Edgecumbe. “Early in the season there was a sprea...
Over 200 runners, teams from 15 communities across Southeast, stampeded into Petersburg for last weekend's cross country invitational. Vikings volleyball faced some serious competition last week when the very experienced Mt. Egecumbe Braves came to town. Mt. Edgecumbe was 3A state champion in 2011 and 2012, and runner up last year. "They're returning everyone from last year's squad that made the state championship matchup, and four of their six starters were on the championship team prior to that," said Vikings Head Coach Jaime Cabral. It was an opportunity for the young Viking squad, who have no seniors on varsity, to see...
Two dozen daring dancers braved torrential rains to participate in National Dance Day on Saturday at the ball field. The pitching mound may have been soaked, but the dancers scored a home run with their interpretation of this year's advanced dance routine set to Mark Ballas' single "Get My Name." This is the third non-consecutive year Petersburg dancers have participated in the national event. The videos of this and past years' routine can be viewed on YouTube. This year's event was organized... Full story
July 25, 1914 – Workmen employed in blasting soft rock from a quarry in Connecticut recently came across a bit of rock which had been blown out about thirty feet underground which, when cracked, exposed a live worm that lived five days after it had been exposed to view. How long the worm had been occupying his cramped quarters is mere conjecture. July 26, 1974 Celebrating Pilot's 40th Year – Petersburg gets publicity in the strangest ways. It has come to our attention that the Department of the Interior, in a report on the subject of "Towing Ic...

Look at the facts To the Editor: Papac Alaska Logging, Inc. (PAL) worked on Kupreanof Island, Lindenberg Peninsula, from April through November last year, on the U.S. Forest Service Tonka Timber Sale and is currently working this site. It has been brought to our attention that there is a misconception that we are not supporting local business or contributing positively to the Petersburg community. Our company, as well as the timber fallers of Timberwolf Cutting, is based out of Craig, on Prince of Wales Island, only a short distance south of...
The Petersburg Vikings baseball team finished third in the region tournament last weekend after defeating Sitka's Thunder Mountain High School twice. "We knew going in that if we could get runs to support Colby Bell that we could beat them," Head Coach Jim Engell said. "When we got into it, Colby was pitching the same way he's been pitching all year, just completely lights out. He had complete command of the strike zone. His velocity was great." During the first game against Thunder Mountain...

After the momentous question was thoroughly discussed, a committee was finally appointed and the preliminaries ordered commenced. It was practically agreed that the council spend the money available in t...
It’s common knowledge the Vikings reined supreme 1,000 years ago as they built long ships to pillage Europe and discover North America. What may not be well known is the Viking had a parliament style of government. Local and Norwegian cultural historian Sue Paulsen said representatives would meet for two weeks each summer. “People would represent each hamlet,” Paulsen said. “They would send a person, a representative, a legislator if you would. They would vote on any changes that they wanted to have.” Paulsen said representative governmen...

The Petersburg Vikings baseball team kicked off its season with two wins against the Junior Varsity Sitka Wolves last week. Head Coach Jim Engle said the Vikings are a small but balanced team this year with several veteran players and other new but strong athletes added to the ten-player squad. “We have some deep pitching ability,” Engle said. We have a couple guys that can chew up a lot of innings that can give us 100 plus pitches in complete games if we need to.” The number one starter is junior Colby Bell. Engel said Bell has a solid fastbal...
More than 50 cruise ships will stop in Petersburg this spring and summer—slightly up from last year. The vessel Safari Legacy stopped in Petersburg twice last year but is making nine stops this year. Cruise ships visiting Petersburg typically carry between 60 to 80 passengers and remain in port between four to seven hours. Viking Travel owner Dave Berg said visitors are offered a shuttle into town as well as several guided tours and a chance to watch traditional Norwegian dancing at the Sons of Norway Hall. “It’s nice to have the ships comin...
March 14, 1914 – Dr. Maud L. Dunn, a noted American lecturer now in London, in one of her lectures said that some women are always complaining, always frowning, and always telling their neighbors that they are full of aches. You may take it that their troubles are due to corsets. They are the kind of women whose husbands seek the aid of the divorce tribunals. Corsets, she says, should be put on when lying down, as then the organs are in their natural position. Corsets should be three inches less than the waist measurement. March 13, 1974 C...
The Lady Vikings brought home three wins after last week's grueling four games in four days against Sitka and Mt. Edgecumbe. The Lady Vikings defeated Mt. Edgecumbe last Wednesday in overtime 50-49. "It was a great game," Head Coach Dino Brock said. "The score went back and forth." The Petersburg squad jumped out to a 16-5 lead at the end of the first quarter but the Mt. Edgecumbe squad fought back and were only down six at the half. The back and forth battle continued during the third quarter b...

The squad took control of Friday's game early in the first quarter with a 16-5 lead against the Wolves. "We were being quick but not in a hurry," Head Coach Rick Brock said. "We were flashing into their openings." The Vikings kept the momentum going halfway through the second quarter until the Wolves turned the tide with several big runs and outscored the Petersburg...
February 21, 1914 – While the passing of the Alaska Railroad Bill was a foregone conclusion, yet, great was the strain and anxiety upon its supporters at the final vote. The galleries were full of spectators and excited Alaskans were to be noticed everywhere. The count of the vote showed that 230 had favored the project, while 87 voted against. Some were opposed to the whole bill, others favored some amendments. However, an amendment that was accepted that did away with the issue of bonds. The amendment provides a direct appropriation from the...
The Petersburg Vikings duked it out with Mt. Edgecumbe Friday night coming away from the bout with a last second win. Head Coach Rick Brock said he knew going into the game the battle against Mt. Edgecumbe would be hard fought and the atmosphere resembled tournament style play. "The crowd was incredible," Brock said. "The noise level in the gym was tremendous. The level of play was intense." Mt. Edgecumbe took an early double-digit lead in the first quarter as the Vikings struggled to find...
