The Petersburg Vikings battled through four long conference games last weekend and brought home two wins. The Alaska Native Brotherhood and Alaska Native Sisterhood is requesting donated space in the parks and rec community gym to host its Grand Camp convention in early October. The borough assembly will hold a public hearing concerning the recent changes made to the landfill’s salvage program. The changes come after the sanitation ordinance was updated to include the new recycling program. Karl Hagerman, public works director, reworked the fee structure. Originally, a salvage permit cost $5 for two days and $100 for an annual permit. After the changes, the annual permit was eliminated and a day use permit now costs $10 for one day. The boys Viking basketball squad came home with a win from last weekend’s series against Ketchikan. They beat Ketchikan 58-46 on Friday night and lost a close game Saturday 46-55. The sales tax ordinance review committee met last Wednesday and discussed the challenges of interpreting language in the code. The review committee’s mission is to simplify the code and collection procedures, and to generate an equal or greater amount of revenue so the borough does not have to decrease services or increase property taxes. More than ten business leaders in the Petersburg tourism industry met Monday to discuss how the season fared this year and what could be done better in the future. Although the general consensus was that last summer was a success, there are some kinks to work out. The Vikings varsity girl’s volleyball team had a strong start last Friday night when they faced Sitka High School but didn’t pull through for the win. Petersburg’s high school girl’s volleyball squad fell to the two time defending state champions of Mount Edgecumbe in Sitka last weekend. Wrestling Hall of Fame member Wade Schalles taught a wrestling camp in Petersburg last week. Schalles won four NCAA Championships, is registered in the Guinness Book of World Records as having the most pins and wins of any wrestler and won 15 national championships in five different disciplines.
