  • Local fuel price notices to end

    Dec 28, 2017

With the next edition, the Wrangell Sentinel and the Petersburg Pilot will discontinue the Posted Fuel Notice that has been published in both papers since October 2015. Fuel prices were more volatile then and the price fluctuation was of more interest to the public. The retail price is clearly market driven and both Wrangell and Petersburg have competing vendors in each community. It’s obvious that the size of the market and the distance from the refinery will continue to influence the prices consumers pay at the pump in both towns. Absent n...

  • The Story of Christmas

    Dec 21, 2017

And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem to be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. And so it was, that while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths,...

Reducing waste come the holiday season does not mean celebrants have to forgo big family meals or beautifully wrapped gifts. In fact, there are several ways to reduce waste without spoiling the spirit of the season. Give eco-conscious gifts. The environment may not be the first thing t...

    Dec 21, 2017

Roughly 1.6 billion Christmas cards, including boxed cards, are purchased in a given year. That’s quite a lot of cards to address and mail, and many festive greetings for recipients to read and display. With so much money and effort put into sharing Christmas greetings, some people may wonder how they can prolong the merriment offered by these cards. Here are some creative ways to put Christmas cards to new use once this holiday season has come and gone. • Make your own gift tags. Christmas card stock is the perfect medium to turn into gif...

  • Yes I Love Christmas

    Dec 21, 2017

I can remember many Christmases from the time I was just a young boy and the excitement of waiting to see what would be in the gift wrapped presents. I remember many Christmas eve nights hardly being able to sleep waiting for morning. I also remember going to my grandparents’ house on Christmas eve with all the treats our grandmother had made, then of course, the gifts. Most Christmases we would then go to our uncle and aunt’s home for more food and then, the gifts. We were raised going to church and so there was the “Christmas program...

  • Christmas traditions around the world: Norway

    Ola Richards|Dec 21, 2017

By Ola Richards Norway starts the Christmas season in November with a series of Christmas parties at work, clubs, schools and every other organization. Every year, at the end of November many cities have a lighting of the City Lights ceremony, complete with parade and an honorary person pulling the big switch to light up the city streets. Advent means “coming” and is a preparation time for Christians to celebrate Christmas. The Advent season starts on Advent Sunday, which marks four Sundays before Christmas. Early December is a time for baking...

  • Christmas traditions around the world: Philippines

    Dec 21, 2017

People in the Philippines like to celebrate Christmas for as long as possible. The playing of Christmas carols in shops can start in September. The formal Christmas celebrations start on December 16 when many people go the first of nine pre-dawn or early morning masses. The last mass is on Christmas day. The Christmas celebrations continue to the first Sunday in January when Epiphany or the Feast of the Three Kings is celebrated. In the Philippines the early masses held before Christmas are called the 'Misa de Gallo' or 'Simbang Gabi' in...

  • Christmas: God meets our greatest need

    Dec 21, 2017

We have a need. God has a plan. He gave us a Savior. The Bible clearly declares that we have a need. “As it is written: ‘There is none righteous, no, not one’” (Rom. 3:10 NKJV). “All we like sheep have gone our own way; and the Lord hath laid on him (Jesus) the iniquity of us all” (Isa. 53:6). With this need very evident, God in his amazing grace has provided a divine plan. “And she (Mary) will bring forth a son and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” “So all this was done that it might be fulfille...

  • The Innkeeper: A scrooge or a saint?

    Dec 21, 2017

Luke tells us: Mary gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. The Innkeeper said “no room” but was he really telling the truth? Perhaps the Innkeeper had the heart of Old Ebenezer Scrooge and cared only for money. Maybe he sized up this man and woman as dirt poor with no money to pay. So what if she is near her time? He couldn’t let her have her baby here, all that screaming would keep the other well paying guests awake. “Go on” he says, “I said n...

  • How Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer was almost a blue-nosed reindeer

    Dec 21, 2017

Adults and children alike are familiar with the tale of “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.” As the lyrics of the song illustrate: Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer had a very shiny nose / And if you ever saw it, you would even say it glows. Popularized by the song written by Johnny Marks and sung by Gene Autry, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer dates back to 1939. A copywriter named Robert L. May created the story of the misfit reindeer in 1939 when working for Montgomery Ward. The retail giant was producing marketing holiday coloring books for chi...

  • The origins of classic Christmas favorites

    Dec 21, 2017

Scores of artists have released Christmas albums or holiday-infused singles during their careers. Christmas music can be broken down into two distinct categories: traditional hymns and carols and popular secular songs. Some believe that the religious standards have been passed down since the earliest days of Christianity. However, that is not so. Before the 12th century, music wasn’t typically included in religious services, and even then music was included only sporadically. In present day, religious tunes identified as Christmas music typical...

  • The quest to find for hope and direction

    Dec 21, 2017

Where did I put that ….. How many times have you said of heard that? Some of us spend a fair amount of time looking for: keys, billfold, cell phone, a mate for a sock, spouse, friend, son. Some days/months we look for things more important: hope that a child will “find their way”, hope that those suffering from the cold or flu will find relief, hope that those who feel out of place around the Christmas table will once again feel they belong, hope that those searching for meaning and intimacy in all the wrong places will discover direction, hope...

  • Holiday activities for adults and children alike

    Dec 21, 2017

New Year’s Eve is one of the most festive nights of the year, when friends and families gather to count down the waning moments of the year as they anticipate the fun times ahead in the year to come. While adults tend to look forward to New Year’s Eve festivities more than children, there are ways parents can ring in the New Year with their kids. Invite kids into the kitchen. New Year’s Eve festivities often include food, so why not invite youngsters into the kitchen to cook alongside you? Kids may not be interested in preparing the main cours...

  • Enjoy a safe and sound New Year's Eve

    Dec 21, 2017

New Year's Eve is one of the most popular party days of the year. As the clock ticks down toward a new year, revelers across the globe raise glasses of champagne in celebration of what's to come. Such celebrations are a staple of the holiday season, but so, too, are accidents that result from excessive partying. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, January 1, when many New Year's Eve celebrants are heading home in the wee hours of the morning, is when the highest percentage of deaths related to alcohol occur. In addition,...
