    January 6, 1917 – C. A. Arness has installed a power gurdy and winch in Capt. Strand’s gasboat Agnes. The boat was also recently equipped with a new fourteen-horse-power engine. The Agnes has heretofore been fishing at the Stikine, but will now be used for halibut fishing. Mr. Arness also completed this week a rather intricate job of oxy-acetylene welding for Pete Constrad’s logging boat. In an accident the friction drum and clutch had been broken into fourteen pieces.     December 30, 1916 – It is reported that Chief Steward Page of the Americ awoke in his berth Tuesday night with the impression that the craft was sinking. He rushed uptown for help. When Hogue had sauntered out to the float he found the boat had hit bottom all right – but the tide was out.     The Petersburg Rotary Club has again brought in the most Red Kettle donations during the 2016 Christmas season. Rotary collections totaled $4,979.32. Petersburg Vessel Owners Association collected $2,655.54 and Sons of Norway rang-in $1,162.82. Red Kettles stationed at store checkout counters brought in $830.73 for a total of $13,643.79 for the annual event. Businesses, organizations and individuals all manned the downtown kettle on behalf of the Salvation Army. Donations were down by $1,553.63...

    Incumbents retained their positions after the results were announced for the Petersburg Chamber of Commerce 2016 board of directors’ election for 2017-18 service. Angela Christensen, Dave Kensinger and Serena Newman will continue with the board for 2-year terms and new board member Chelsee Hansen was also elected to the board.     December 27, 1916 – The Firemen's masquerade ball last Saturday night was a big success, with a big and jolly crowd in attendance. There were so many good costumes and impersonations that the judges – John Allen, Captain Grindrod, and C. E. Clure – found it a difficult job decide on the prize-winners.
