Petersburg High School senior, Krissa Davis, competed in the State Science Symposium in Fairbanks for her project entitled “Testing Organic Labeling Laws by the Presence of GMO's in Corn,” and took fifth place. The 32nd Annual Petersburg Chamber of Commerce King Salmon Derby gets underway this Friday morning at 7 a.m. The derby continues through the Memorial Day Weekend and ends Monday at 5 p.m. Two tagged fish will be available for anglers this year. The 55th Little Norway Festival begins today and Petersburg is ready to celebrate. This festival celebrates Syttende Mai or May 17, the signing of Norway's Constitution in 1814. Over the more than 50 years since its beginning, the Little Norway Festival has expanded to celebrate, not only, Norway's Constitution but also U.S. Armed Forces Day and the coming of spring and the beginning of the fishing season. Members of the One People Canoe Society lost several of their canoe paddles, along with other equipment, as they made their way to Wrangell to participate in the rededication of Chief Shakes House. The canoers ran into bad weather in the Seymour Canal area and were forced to move from the canoes to a larger vessel.
