May 5, 1982 - Many of the 61 nurses attending the Alaska Nurses Association convention held in Petersburg April 29-May 1 said it was one of the best conventions they had ever attended. Last week the Petersburg music program travelled to Sitka to perform in the annual Southeast Music Fest. “This was one of the best festivals in my 14 years of experience,” said Petersburg’s director Matt Lenhard. “All the groups were very prepared and it translated to a confident performance, with a very good program. Mild weather and a high tide welcomed this year's annual Blessing of the Fleet on Sunday. The event was hosted by Petersburg Ministerial Association, Petersburg Vessel Owners and the Sons of Norway. April 7, 1982 - The Alaska Department of Fish and Game reported that 4,260 tons of herring were harvested from the waters of Sitka Sound adjacent to Halibut Point Road during the March 30 fishery which lasted from noon to 6:10 p.m. Although Petersburg fisheries was not disclosing the poundage of roe herring it is handling from the Sitka fishery, area manager Rick Dutton reports that “we did fine.” A harvest guideline of approximately 3,000 tons of herring was established for the 1982 fis...

Harold Peppers, 78, passed away April 16, 2012 at the Petersburg Medical Center. His best friend sweetheart, Pauline Young, son Bill and several family members were at his side. Harold was born to Onie and Adle Peppers on February 2, 1934 in Norman, Ark. The family moved to Longview, Wash. in 1942 where he lived until March 2000 when he and Pauline moved to Petersburg. Shakes Slough was literally filled with snow this winter. Cabins with 14-ft. roof peaks were buried under the snow pack, which likely exceeded 26 to 28-ft. with the compression of the snow layers over the winter.
