PHS shop class, Forest Service collaborate

The U.S. Forest Service and Nick Popp's high school shop class are collaborating to update the USFS log books (above) and routed-wood signs to mark trails such as the new Raven's trailhead near Sandy Beach.

The Petersburg High School shop class recently finished making 19 new log books for the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) cabins in the area using the computer numerical controlled (CNC) router put into service at the school in the fall of 2013.

The shop class, lead by teacher Nick Popp, has been using the CNC router to produce signage for the Petersburg Borough and other organizations around town. The partnership between the USFS and the school began the idea for such collaborations, and also helped the school secure the initial grant funding for the equipment.
