Obituary

Frank T. Kaino, 96

Frank T. Kaino was born on February 18, 1930, in Petersburg, Alaska, the youngest son of Shunichi (Papa) and Hana (Mama) Kaino. When he was twelve years, his school education was interrupted when he and his parents were incarcerated in a World War II Japanese internment camp called Minidoka, in Idaho.

After their release from Minidoka they lived for a short time in Denver, Colorado, before returning to Petersburg. Frank graduated from Petersburg High School as one of the nine members of the class of 1948. After some memorable experiences working at the Cold Storage his free and creative spirit led him to art school in California, and on to a career in industrial graphic design that took him to New York City and Minneapolis, Minnesota before settling in Seattle.

Frank was also an accomplished photographer and worked at four World Fairs. He enjoyed exploring the world, particularly through cruising, and became a Diamond Plus member of the Royal Caribbean Cruise Line.

Frank passed away at his home in Shoreline, Washington, on May 4, 2026, at the age of 96. Despite leaving many years ago, he never forgot his friends in Petersburg. He was preceded in death by many of those friends; parents, Mama and Papa Kaino; brother Ted; a sister in Japan and a sister who died as a toddler in Eatonville, Washington.

Frank is survived by his niece Roxie, his nephews, Doug and Kerry, and their families.
