The Petersburg High School girl's track team won the conference track meet division wide in Ketchikan last weekend-a feat the Petersburg girl's team hasn't accomplished in more than three decades. Petersburg's Ragnarøk Rollers hosted the Wrangell's Garnet Grit Betties and Ketchikan's Rainforest Rollergirls for a big roller derby weekend in Petersburg; consisting of skills workshops, referee training, and a two-hour scrimmage in front of a packed house of fans cheering for their favorite roller girls. Five swimmers represented Petersburg at the State Championship swim meet last weekend in Anchorage, and after getting mostly personal best times in preliminaries on Friday, and then even better times in the finals, the boys ended up placing 5th out of 19 schools with many individual achievements, including Abel Aulbach defending his state title in the 100-yard Freestyle event. Swim and Dive's Region V Championship meet took place last weekend in Juneau, and the Petersburg Vikings performed outstandingly well. Vikings cross country runners were in Juneau for the season's last regular meet over the weekend. They ran against teams from throughout Southeast, with 76 girls and 92 boys competing in rainy, windy conditions. Juneau's course is reputed as the toughest around mostly due to its numerous hills, but conditions were even more extreme on Saturday. The Petersburg High School Vikings volleyball team opened the regular season last weekend by hosting the Juneau-Douglas Crimson Bears for two days of games. Soccer players in Petersburg began an exciting new tradition earlier this month. For the first time ever, a group, many of whom have been playing soccer together for over ten years at the Community Gym, formed a co-ed Petersburg team and travelled to Juneau to compete in the Shamrock Invitational Indoor Soccer Tournament. Vikings girls basketball started out the competition season with a weekend on the road against a perennial powerhouse, the Lady Braves of Mt. Edgecumbe. The Petersburg girls have a lot of fresh faces with eight out of the 13 girls traveling to Sitka being freshmen.
