  • Alaska's lieutenant governor plans recount of narrowly defeated ranked choice voting repeal measure

    Sean Maguire, Anchorage Daily News|Nov 28, 2024

Under Alaska law, the state will pay for a recount in races where the margin is les...

  • Yesterday's News: News from 25-50-75-100 years ago

    Nov 28, 2024

November 28, 1924 – Frank Cotter dropped into the Herald office when the Northwestern was in port. HE is known to the reading public by the pen name of Pat O’Connor. When we knew Frank in the Tanana he was a slim waisted athlete; a champion bike rider, a runner and a boxer and a pole vaulter. But when he walked into our office the other day he was almost corpulent and decidedly prosperous looking. Possibly globetrotting to China, Japan, Australia, Korea, Tibet, Russia and other queer places have rounded out his slim form of days gone by, or...

    Nov 28, 2024

Tariffs harmed Alaska seafood and timber exports To the Editor: With this week’s call to impose tariffs on all products coming into the United States from Canada, Mexico and China, it looks like we may find out pretty quickly how they work in making things more affordable here in Petersburg. Like Mexico paying for the wall, it’s simply not true that Americans won’t face some consequences. Trade wars are tricky and complicated and new tariffs at such high levels threaten to upend international trade, disrupt supply chains, and send prices soari...

  • Online shopping generated 11 percent of Petersburg's FY24 sales tax revenue

    Olivia Rose|Nov 28, 2024

Before a 2018 U.S. Supreme Court decision removed the legal barrier to apply local sales taxes to online purchases, states and municipalities were blocked from collecting sales taxes from sellers that did not have a physical presence in the tax jurisdiction. Most online merchants declined to collect sales taxes on goods shipped into states and cities with a local tax. Residents of Petersburg could purchase tax-free orders from Walmart, Eddie Bauer and other vendors online. After the ruling, to...
