  • New ferries to be built in Ketchikan shipyard

    Alaska Governor Sean Parnell announced Saturday that Ketchikan-based Vigor Alaska will construct two new day ferries for the Alaska Marine Highway System (AMHS). Construction of both vessels is scheduled to begin in October, and completion is estimated to take four years. Each vessel will be a 280-foot, “roll on–roll off” type passenger ferry, capable of carrying 450 passengers and up to 60 vehicles.     Representatives from the Alaska Department of Transportation (ADOT&PF) gave a public presentation on their long-range transportation plan for Southeast Alaska last Wednesday.     A new black and white sign will designate "Headlights On At All Times" in Petersburg at the Kings Row intersection (MP 0.7) to 2.2 miles south of the South Mitkof Ferry Terminal access road (MP 26) on Mitkof Highway.     Ferry schedules are continuing to be revised after the M/V Columbia experienced mechanical issues on its way from Portland to Bellingham.     A bill being considered in the State Senate could impact local ferry workers. Senate Bill 182 amends Alaska State law pertaining to bargaining rights to eliminate what is known as a cost-of-living differential. This provision of contracts allows for salaries to be automatically adjusted to match the cost of living of a certain area.
