March 13, 1915 – The Border Line Transportation Company's steamer Despatch arrived in port at one o' clock Tuesday morning, and, after taking on 501 empty oil drums, departed south. The vessel did not carry passengers this trip, owing to her staterooms having been newly painted. March 6, 1915 – The Alaska school-land bill was passed by congress, and has been signed by the president. The measure provides that moneys derived from the sale of lands in the grant, which is comprised of sections 16 and 33 in all of Alaska, shall be used toward the support of territorial schools. In the Tanana valley, section 16 is added to the grant. Four sections near Fairbanks are granted for college purposes. Petersburg Police officer James Kerr (left) was recognized at Monday's assembly meeting by Police Chief Kelly Swihart for two life-saving efforts performed on duty. "Sgt, Kerr placed himself at risk by performing rescue breathing on two subjects who were involved in illicit intravenous drug use," Swihart said. February 20, 1915 – There was a big attendance at the Firemen’s Annual Ball last Saturday night. The band opened with several numbers, and dance music was furnished by an orchestra of eight pieces. In a brief address, Mayor Finch expressed the thanks of the fire boys for the good attendance, and their appreciation of the presence of a big delegation of Wrangell folks. Arthur F. The Petersburg Girl Scouts participated in World Thinking Day on Saturday at the Catholic church. This year's theme was "we can create peace through partnerships." The local troop participated in the worldwide event by making a peace wreath from construction paper cutouts of their hand prints and doing a collaborative art project. February 13, 1915 – The steamer Santa Ana, of the Alaska Steamship Company's fleet, has been remodeled for passenger service, and was announced to sail from the Sound on February 12 for Seward, to take the place of the steamer Dora on the Peninsula run. The Santa Ana now has accommodations for 75 first-class and 30 steerage passengers. On her way north, the vessel brings a shipment of coal and supplies for the Chichagoff mine.
