Obituary: Mark Steven Laurila, 62

Mark Steven Laurila, 62, passed away at his home in Anacortes, Washington on Saturday, September 3, 2022. Mark was born in Ishpeming, Michigan on June 17, 1960 to Charles Laurila and Sally (Makinen) Hall. Mark was a 1978 graduate of Republic-Michigamme High School, Republic, Michigan. Following his high school graduation, Mark moved to Petersburg, Alaska where he resided for many years working as a commercial fisherman. Mark eventually moved to Washington state and made his home in Anacortes.

Anyone who had the opportunity to know Mark, knew him as a larger than life, free-spirited individual who loved his family, friends, and animals. He was a "kid magnet" and his nieces and nephews ran to attack him as soon as he walked through the door. Mark was an exceptional storyteller, and everyone always loved to hear about his many adventures. He was the epitome of sisu and could work circles around anyone. Mark had a heart of gold and could make anyone laugh. He will be deeply missed by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Mark is survived by his father Charles (Phyllis) Laurila of Iron Mountain, Michigan; siblings Bradley (Sue) Laurila of Carol Stream, Illinois, Kimberley (Rusty) Rose of Roselle, Illinois, Bryan (Melissa) Laurila of Iron Mountain, Michigan, and Shannon (Eric) Wixtrom of Hazel Green, Alabama; step-father James Hall of Republic, Michigan; step-siblings Jennifer (Lee) McMullen of Hillman, Michigan, Paul (Rebecca) Korol of Hudson, Ohio, and Tracy (James) Hofer of Aberdeen, South Dakota; many nieces and nephews; and his companion Holly Zaremba of Anacortes, Washington.

Mark was preceded in death by his mother Sally (Makinen) Hall, grandparents Oliver and Audrey Laurila and William and Sylvia Makinen, and step-brother David Hall.

Funeral arrangements will be provided at a later date.
