Mary "Doll" Benson, 74
Mary Peter Benson was born in Fairbanks, Alaska, on October 9, 1950, to Simel and Vivian Peter. She grew up along the Yukon River in Nulato, deeply connected to her Alaskan roots and traditions. Mary graduated from Mt. Edgecumbe High School in 1969, where she formed many lifelong friendships.
Affectionately known as "Doll," Mary had the unique gift of remembering small, meaningful details about everyone she met. Her warmth, generosity, and genuine interest in others made her a friend to all, welcoming everyone with open arms. She dearly loved her family and friends, making each one feel special and valued.
Mary had a love for reading, sharing meals, and engaging in good conversations, berry picking and enjoying traditional foods, often bringing people together through her hospitality. She spent many memorable years living in Petersburg, Alaska, during the 1970s and 1980s, and several years in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. She later returned to Galena, Alaska, and lived there happily for the final years of her life. She passed away peacefully on March 25, 2025.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Simel and Vivian Peter, and her siblings, Simeon Mountain, Flora Esmailka, Lilly Thurmond, Hattie Peter, and Liza Johnson.
She is survived by her loving husband, Gary Benson of Galena; children, David Beardslee (Katie), Leanne Dapcevich (Sam), Jill Beardslee (Kelly), and Leonard Benson; her brothers, Clyde Peter and Bernard Peter; sister, Leona Peter; grandchildren, Taylor, Max, Kinsey, William and Elliott; great-grandson, Luca; as well as numerous friends and extended family members who will deeply miss her gentle presence and thoughtful heart.
Mary was lovingly laid to rest by her family and friends beside the Yukon River in Alaska on March 31, 2025. Her memory will be treasured by all who knew and loved her.
