Vikings baseball swept a home series against Craig, Wrangell, and Juneau JV last weekend. The first game, against the Juneau JV on Thursday, was a six to five Vikings win. Colby Bell started on the mound for Petersburg through the first four innings and gave up only three hits and four runs, and struck out eight Juneau batters. Last week the Petersburg music program travelled to Sitka to perform in the annual Southeast Music Fest. “This was one of the best festivals in my 14 years of experience,” said Petersburg’s director Matt Lenhard. “All the groups were very prepared and it translated to a confident performance, with a very good program. The track and field team traveled to Juneau last weekend to face off against some tough 4A schools as well at Sitka and Craig, perennial powerhouses in the 3A division. The Girls team ended up in fourth place and the boys came in sixth. Viking Swim Club (VSC) ended its season ended last weekend at the Junior Olympics meet in Anchorage. Swim clubs from across Alaska send their top swimmers to compete in this championship. Track and field kicked off their season in Ketchikan with an unusual meet last weekend. The Lady Panthers of Craig came to town to face the Lady Vikings last weekend in the girls’ last home series of the season. In 1945, the Alaska state legislature signed the Anti-Discrimination Act into law, and began an era of improved racial relations in the state. Civil rights leader Elizabeth Peratrovich was instrumental in this bill’s passage and her work is celebrated across the state on February 16, Elizabeth Peratrovich Day, the anniversary of the signing of the Anti-Discrimination Act.
