Petersburg High School shop teacher Dave Owens traveled to Sitka earlier this month for training on how to better use design software and manufacturing tools. This year is the first for Owens teaching the industrial arts program at PHS, but he spent well over 10 years heading up elementary school classrooms. Walter A. Welton, 64, of Veneta, Ore. died Feb. 27, 2016 at his home after a fight with heart complications and Parkinson's. He was born in Covina, Calif. Aug. 25, 1951 to Eldean and John Welton. The Petersburg High School boys basketball team traveled south to take on the Metlakatla Chiefs last weekend and lost both games. The last time the Vikings took on the Chiefs the games went differently with the Vikings keeping Danny Marsden of Metlakatla in check. Vivian Elida Westre, 95, passed away February 12, 2016, with her two children at her side at Petersburg Medical Center Long Term Care. She was born July 17, 1920 in Ketchikan, Alaska to Gifford and Agnes Close. Her father built a home next to Sunny Point Cannery near where the Ketchikan ferry terminal exists today.
