Jonathan Carl Ness, 61, passed away on June 8, 2012 in Petersburg, Alaska. He was born on August 15, 1950 in Petersburg, Alaska to Leo and Ruth Ness. Jon was the second son and younger brother to Steve. He was considered a miracle baby, being born with a congenital heart defect. Mom, Dad, Steve, and numerous friends had to help carry him up the stairs at school, as he was too weak to do so himself. Jon had two heart surgeries as a child. The Local Boundary Commission voted 4 to 1 Friday, June 1, that the City of Petersburg petition for borough formation met all standards for incorporation and authorized that a community wide election be held. The election date has yet to be determined, but is expected to be sometime this fall. The election will be conducted by the State of Alaska and will be a mail-in election. Residents of Petersburg gathered to celebrate the groundbreaking for the new Petersburg Public Library Saturday morning. Rain did nothing to deter the mood of those gathered. The Region V Baseball Championships continued on Thursday for the Vikings after an 8-3 loss to Thunder Mountain moved Petersburg into the tournament’s loser’s bracket. The Petersburg Community Foundation on Saturday awarded $7,000 in competitive grants to local organizations and a $5,000 discretionary grant to the new City Library. The announcements were made at a donor event held at Glorianne Wollen's home, amidst the busy Little Norway Festival weekend. May 19, 1982 - With a six-day halibut opening in Area 2 drawing to a close on Monday, local processors reported that they were still receiving mainly shipments from smaller boats fishing close to Petersburg and that it was too early to determine the overall success of the halibut season. The Petersburg School District Board unanimously approved the $8.7 million balanced budget Tuesday night. The budget calls for 78 percent of the funding to come from the state and foundation, 20 percent from city and the remaining 2 percent in local revenues comes from various grants and donations. The expenditures for next year have not changed much from FY12. The district is expected to spend 72 percent of its budget on instruction. Petersburg residents can now pay their utility bills online. A new program allows utility customers to register their accounts and then pay monthly bills on the web site with a credit card. Mary Alice Longworth, 93, passed away peacefully at Mt. View Manor on April 12, 2012, in the comfort of her four children, longtime friends, and the loving staff of Mt. View Manor Assisted Living.
