Ruth W. Sandvik, 100, Petersburg resident for 75 years, died on July 29, 2016 at Seattle"s Kline Galland home in the comfort of her family. Ruth fractured her hip in Petersburg, then was medevaced to Swedish Hospital in Seattle. After a successful operation she suffered a stroke and didn"t ever recover. Ruth was born in Portland, Oregon to Hermann and Vesta Wetterborg on February 8, 1916. Her parents preceded her in death as well as her sister, Betty. She and Betty attended Portland schools... The Petersburg High School cross country teams traveled to Ketchikan last weekend to open the 2016 season. The boys and girls performed remarkably well to kick off the year, with the boys earning a sixth place finish and the girls taking third overall. Head coach Tom Thompson says the finish for the girls team isn't shocking, but he did have some questions about how they would bounce back after losing two impactful runners from last year's squad. The local Rotary club is known for sending students on its year-long exchange program to study abroad, but this summer a PHS student took part in the club's short-term program. Gillian Wittstock spent four weeks with a family in Germany and the two girls who hosted her there recently traveled to Petersburg to stay with the Wittstocks. Two employees at Petersburg Children's Center (PCC) recently received their child development associate credential. For Rocky Peeler and Theressa Phillips, both mothers of two, the achievement means looking toward the future with fresh training and knowledge to put into practice. WRANGELL – Last week a new public cabin was added to Wrangell Ranger District’s list, with the U.S. Forest Service’s administrative camp at Deep Bay converted into a two-building recreational site. The cabin will be the district’s 23rd, and its first on Zarembo Island, located about five miles to Wrangell’s southwest. Jamie Bryson, 81, died surrounded by his children and his wife Marjorie on August 8, 2016 at his home in Paonia, Colorado, after a long struggle with Parkinson's disease. Jamie was born to Stuart James and Stella Elizabeth Bryson in San Francisco in 1935. He grew up in southern California, but Jamie traveled extensively and ultimately called Alaska home. The school board met in the high school library Tuesday night, after taking July off. The board also took a tour of summer improvements with director of maintenance Dan Tate before the meeting. Tate showed off and talked about the school’s new carpet, changes to a few classrooms and projects still in the works. Bill Overdorff died suddenly on July 22, 2016 in Brownsville, OR, one week short of his 84th birthday. William Roy Overdorff, Jr. was born to Jessie (Olson) and William Roy Overdorff, Sr. in Washington D.C. on July 30, 1932; he was an only child. WRANGELL - Close to 100 people participated in a memorial walk on Sunday, held to remember those killed or injured in a car crash in Petersburg early last week. Meeting at Wrangell's city dock, more than a third of the walkers were from the neighboring community. Organized by local running group Southeast Beasts, the five kilometer (three mile) course was intended to help show support during a time of tragedy. A celebration for the opening of Centennial Park, the latest addition to town and the Petersburg Public Library, took place last weekend with around 100 people showing up for the event. Locals gathered on the Birch Street boardwalk were treated to Janet Holten singing "Alaska's Flag," and a few words from Sue Paulsen before Polly Lee took center stage. Hundreds of Petersburg residents turned out Monday night to take part in a candlelight vigil for the victims in a one-vehicle crash earlier in the day. The vigil began downtown and made its way to the ballfields, where paper lanterns were released, and the firework show concluded shortly after. Two females are deceased after an early morning one-vehicle crash, and a community vigil will be held tonight before the fireworks. Two others in the crash were taken to the local hospital, but their names have not been released. Richard Bert Hansen, 85, passed away June 20, 2016 in Palm Springs, California. He was born in Cordova, Alaska on December 8, 1930 to Grace and William Hansen. Richard grew up in Cordova and Juneau, Alaska loving sports, particularly basketball. His Juneau High School basketball team won the state championship in 1950. In his 20s his city league basketball team won the Gold Medal Championship and he was named MVP. The school board met for its monthly meeting Tuesday, and worked its way through a full agenda including the FY17 budget, changes to student handbooks and an activity fee increase. The Petersburg district, like many others in Alaska, is dealing with a tighter budget due to lack of funding. Soon-to-be PHS senior Izabelle Ith traveled to Kodiak last Saturday to compete against the top track and field athletes in Alaska. Ith, coming off another impressive season, earned the invitation to the event and took home three first place finishes. Ith won the triple jump, long jump and 4x400 meter relay. Petersburg High track and field took 15 athletes to the state meet in Anchorage last week, and the girls team scored enough points to earn third place out of 29 1A/2A/3A teams. The number of competitors was the most head coach Brad Taylor had ever taken to the season finale, and every Viking scored points in at least one event. The Petersburg High School baseball team wrapped up the season hosting Regionals last weekend. They dropped their final two games after winning the tournament opener. The team made some defensive mistakes allowing opponents to tack on runs, but all and all, head coach Jim Engell was pleased with the weekend and the team's performance.
