For the second consecutive year, Angele (McDonald) Jones had one of her works accepted for the Alaska Watercolor Society Juried Exhibition. Running anywhere from four to eight miles a day, six days a week, the Petersburg High School cross country team has begun practicing for their first meet of the season at the end of the month. There are 20 kids on this year's team, which includes seniors Jack Byrer, Melanie Chase, Kole Sperl and Noah Sullivan. Anthony Dale Owens, 53, died of a heart attack on July 3, 2019. He was born December 19, 1965 to Gene Fredrick Owens and Joyce Nadine Owens (Adams) in Clinton, Kentucky. He and his family moved the family to Fortine, Montana then several years later, the family moved to Petersburg, Alaska. In grade school Anthony got involved in baseball, and he went on to become the best 12-year-old pitcher in SE Alaska. The borough assembly denied Police Chief Jim Kerr's request to advertise and fill a vacant police sergeant position at an assembly meeting last week. The Muskeg Maleriers donated a sign to the Petersburg School District's garden that sits next to the high school track. Founded in 1974, the group tries to make one donation a year. Hazel Wilcoxon, passed away Nov. 19, 2018 on her 80th birthday. Born in Petersburg, Alaska in 1938, Hazel was the oldest of the three daughters of John "Jack" and Vera O'Donnell. Six Petersburg High School students made the trip to the LeConte Glacier on May 10 for the annual survey of the glacier's face. According to the coordinator of the program, Victor Trautman, one side of the glacier is in about the same location as it was in 2018, but the other side came out about 60 to 80 feet. When Victor Trautman graduated from Dickinson State University in North Dakota in the early 1970s, the biology major received some wise advice from his brother-in-law: people are always going to have kids, and people are always going to need schools. The Petersburg School Board approved the hiring of Heidi Cabral as Rae C. Stedman Elementary School's newest fourth grade teacher at their board meeting last week. Cabral has been an instructional aide with the district for the past year, but has experience teaching sixth grade and English as a Second Language in Kansas.
