    Jess Field|Jun 2, 2016

Petersburg Chamber of Commerce manager Mara Lutomski was treated to an action-packed ending of the 35th Annual Salmon Derby on Monday night. It was the first year overseeing the derby for Lutomski, who had fished the derby before, but never experienced the final minutes at the weigh station before. "It was nice to see that a crowd of people had gathered, which I had been told would happen," she said. "People wanted to see the last action. But everything had been so slow, kind of trickling in thr... Full story

    Jess Field|Jun 2, 2016

Petersburg High track and field took 15 athletes to the state meet in Anchorage last week, and the girls team scored enough points to earn third place out of 29 1A/2A/3A teams. The number of competitors was the most head coach Brad Taylor had ever taken to the season finale, and every Viking scored points in at least one event. • Unacceptable graffiti found at gravel pit

    Jess Field|Jun 2, 2016

People driving by the first gravel pit out of town on Frederick Drive are accustomed to seeing small, scattered signs of graffiti. However, the freshly painted markings found by the Petersburg Police Department (PPD) last Friday while on patrol were completely unacceptable. The gravel pit is three to four miles down the twisting dirt road, and offers privacy and quiet scenery. The area is popular for bonfires. People stopping by the location can see a slightly faded "Jimi" on one side of the... Full story

  • To the Editor:

    Jun 2, 2016

Better safe than sorry To the Editor: It seems to me, that for all practical purposes, with the State vote on marijuana sale within the state, that the ballot wording and subsequent vote, definitely provided for individual cities and towns to decide about pot sales in their specific area. It would be a serious disservice for only a few borough assembly members to decide for the entire town, instead of allowing the people of their town to have a vote on the issue as apparently intended by writers of the State ballot initiative. Are they afraid...

  • Guest Editorial: Treat ferry system like a business

    Ketchikan Daily News|Jun 2, 2016

The Alaska Marine Highway System should become — at least in part — a private enterprise. AMHS has been in business for 50 years; like most businesses, it’s had its problems and it’s even come up with solutions within the realm of possibilities. But, its biggest problem, as many Alaskans have known for some time, is that its ever-changing executive doesn’t make for a consistently charted course. A new governor means a new state Department of Transportation and Public Facilities commissioner and deputy commissioners for the ferry system ...

    Jess Field|Jun 2, 2016

The Petersburg High School baseball team wrapped up the season hosting Regionals last weekend. They dropped their final two games after winning the tournament opener. The team made some defensive mistakes allowing opponents to tack on runs, but all and all, head coach Jim Engell was pleased with the weekend and the team's performance. "I just want to thank all the volunteers that made the tournament possible," he said. "It was a good weekend for us, we played competitive in all three games." Sen...

  • Fish Factor: Legislative budget impasse harming salmon fisheries across the state

    Laine Welch|Jun 2, 2016

The budget impasse with Alaska legislators is wreaking havoc on salmon fisheries across the state, and the industry is bracing for the possibility of a complete shutdown in some regions. If lawmakers can’t agree on a budget by June 1, all state workers will be on notice for layoffs starting July 1. That includes 750 full-time and seasonal workers in the commercial fisheries division, many of whom are the boots on the ground for salmon management. “The word that comes to my mind is catastrophic,” said Scott Kelley, director of the state comme...

  • Deer fawns around Petersburg, do not disturb

    Jun 2, 2016

The first fawns of the season are being reported and sightings will increase over the next few weeks. • Salmon label collection of a lifetime

    Jess Field|Jun 2, 2016

Ever since Karen Hofstad was a kid, she possessed a strong desire to preserve history through collections. She often thought of herself as a detective gathering postcards or matchbook covers, sleuthing out treasure for her collections. Around 1965, her passion for collecting salmon labels became a lifestyle, resulting in decades of effort to document the fishing heritage crucial to the story of Alaska and many Alaskan families. When Hofstad moved to Petersburg in 1960, she was in her mid-20s,...

    Kyle Clayton|Jun 2, 2016

The Class of 2016 graduated Tuesday night in the Petersburg High School gymnasium. Thirty-three seniors were members of this year's class, which PHS principal Rick Dormer described as the "nicest" group of people he's encountered. "To begin my speech every year I do my best to tell these students and the audience my impression of the graduating class or maybe rather how I will at least remember them," Dormer said as he opened up the ceremony. "We've had our dominant classes, we've had our quiet...
